30 Years of Impact: Fighting Child Food Insecurity

In Canada, too many children start their day on an empty stomach, deprived of the nutrition and energy they need to learn and thrive, with 1 in 3 at risk of going to school hungry [1]. With this number steadily rising—up nearly 15% in the past three years— it is clear that childhood food insecurity is an urgent social issue that requires a united effort from governments, non-profit organizations, and the business sector to address effectively.

At Danone Canada, we believe every child deserves nutritious food and the knowledge to make healthy choices. This belief is rooted in Danone’s long-standing commitment to child nutrition. More than a century ago, our founder created the first Danone yogurt—originally sold in pharmacies to help children with digestive difficulties. Since then, our scientific expertise and dedication to children’s nutrition have guided everything we do and the products we make right here in Canada. For decades, we have championed child nutrition and built partnerships and programs that have made a meaningful difference in children’s lives.

Research consistently shows that eating a healthy breakfast is linked to better health and nutrition outcomes. That’s why fighting food insecurity is a at the hearty of our Danone Impact Journey in Canada. Our mission, to bring health through food to as many people as possible, drives our commitment to ensuring that those who need it most have access to nutritious products

How we fight food insecurity

For the last 30 years, Danone Canada and Breakfast Club of Canada have collaborated to give kids a healthy start to their day through breakfast programs across the country, feeding millions of children.

In addition, Danone donates 2.5 million cups of yogurt every year to school breakfast initiatives across Canada, infusing these programs with the healthy food we know children need to start their day and contribute to longer term healthy eating habits.

In 2021, we reinforced this partnership with a multi-year investment of $1.2 million to expand school breakfast programs in the communities that need them most. Importantly, recognizing the disproportionate impact of hunger and poor nutrition among Indigenous children, Danone’s funding prioritized schools in Indigenous communities*, helping launch 17 new breakfast programs. These programs now serve almost 3,500 children every morning, providing over 552,000 nutritious breakfasts annually – tangible proof of Danone’s leadership in action.

* Programs in Indigenous communities or public schools where at least 50% of the school population is Indigenous.

In March 2025, food banks in Canada saw over 2 million visits, marking the highest number in Canadian history[1]. This significant increase in food bank usage underscores the growing need for support to Canadian families amid rising food costs. At Danone, we are uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact on food insecurity through in-kind donations to local food banks as the maker of brands loved by millions of consumers every day. In 2025, Danone donated over 663,000 kg of products to food banks in Ontario and Quebec.
